What Leap is, and what it is not.
No. The term leather only applies to materials made from animal hides and skin. Leap looks and feels close to leather, but it is based on apple pulp. That is why we never describe it as a leather. Leap is a next-gen material.
Yes, 100%. Leap carries the Vegan Trademark from The Vegan Society.
We push the apple pulp content as high as the material will allow. Alongside it, the apple pulp blend contains natural rubber and other biobased ingredients we keep confidential. Leap carries up to 91% biobased content, certified under the USDA Certified Biobased Product Label.
Not entirely, and we would rather say so plainly. Leap is three layers: a textile backing, the apple pulp blend, and a finishing coating. The coating is partly biobased and partly fossil derived, between 5% and 11% of the total weight depending on the specification. The backing differs by line. Leap Original is backed with TENCEL Lyocell. Leap Flex is backed with 100% recycled polyester, which is a plastic, recycled rather than virgin. That balance is what lets the material last as long as your product needs it to.
No. Care for Leap the way you would care for leather. A wipe with a damp cloth is enough. Our care instructions ship with every order and should travel into your own product care guidance.

Dimensions, color, and what the material will take.
Standard thickness is roughly 1.1 mm for Leap Original and 0.9mm for Leap Flex. We can adjust it to your specification, for example by building up the apple layer.
Samples are 10 x 15 cm. Beyond that, Leap is sold by the linear meter in 1.4 m usable width across every SKU. Full rolls are 25 m long.
Leap comes in a standing color range, and the catalog shows what is in stock right now. Custom color and texture is close to open ended, and comes with a MOQ. Tell us the finish you are after and we will tell you whether it is a standard line or a development.
Request the catalogPigment goes into the topcoat only. There is no tanning step, so none of the chromium or tanning effluent that comes with it. Leap is tested against restricted substance lists, including six PFAS below the limit of quantitation on Leap Original, and the reports are in the certification pack.
Water resistant, not waterproof. Clean it with a damp cloth. Do not submerge it, as that can damage the material.
Yes, within limits. Avoid holding Leap above 90°C for long periods. For flame performance, Leap Original and Leap Flex both pass BS 5852 Part 0 and Part 1 and California TB 117. IMO Part 8 for marine interiors is Leap Flex only.
Printing is possible, but Leap arrives as a finished coated material, so we cannot guarantee its properties survive a print process we have not run ourselves. Send us the process you are considering and we will test it with you rather than guess.
Where Leap is made and who makes it.
Leap is manufactured in Germany, roll to roll on a full-scale line that has been running since 2024. Headquarters, R&D, quality control and the warehouse sit in Herlev, Denmark, and every order ships from there.

Yes. For years the honest answer to that question was no. Since the German line came online in 2024 it is yes, with capacity of 100,000 lm a year. Write to orders@beyondleather.dk for the catalog and the ordering process.
How to get Leap into your hands.
Yes. Tell us the application and we send the lines that fit it, not the whole range. The options are on the samples page.
Not loose swatches. We send samples instead, so you can compare finishes side by side. Request them on the sample request page.
Yes. Ask through the contact form or write to orders@beyondleather.dk.
Samples go out weekly. Linear meters take one to two weeks. Full rolls run two to six weeks from payment confirmation, depending on the order. The lead time we quote is the lead time you get. No surprises.
Minimums, shipping and who we sell to.
Price depends on the line, the finish and the volume, so we quote rather than publish. Tell us the application and the meters you expect per year and you get a price per linear meter, usually within two working days.
Ask for pricingThere is no minimum order quantity on standard Leap. You can order from one linear meter, so a first production run can be small. Customized versions carry a MOQ, and the price moves with the specification.Ask us and we will be specific.

Sourcing, end of life, and the parts we have not solved yet.
From juice and cider producers who press local farmers' apples. Pressing leaves 25 to 30 percent of the fruit behind, and for the producer that is a disposal cost. It takes 1.8 kg of apple pulp to make one square meter of Leap.
The natural rubber comes from Asia, through a German supplier.
Between 5% and 11% of the total weight, depending on the specification. It sits in the coating, which we developed with Covestro on INSQIN technology. Leap carries up to 91% biobased content under the USDA Certified Biobased Product Label.
No. Leap is not biodegradable. We do not test it against a biodegradability standard and we make no biodegradability claim for it.
First, longevity. A material that keeps its properties for years is the honest starting point. Today, off-cuts and trims from our own production are reused in testing or go to students. We do not yet run a take-back scheme for finished products, and we will not describe one until it exists. If reuse matters to your project, tell us and we will scope it with you.
We reuse what we can as we tune the line. Off-cuts and trims go to students and into our own testing rather than into a bin.
Yes, on both our existing operations and the setups we are scaling into, and it guides how we build. We are holding it back from publication until third-party verification is complete, because a number without verification is not proof. Ask us and we will share the report with you directly.
Manufacturers, students and suppliers.
Yes. We can introduce you to manufacturers who have already worked with Leap, so nobody is learning the material on your order.
We help where we can, and our production off-cuts often go to students. We cannot promise capacity for every project, so write to us early.
Not at the moment. We work with established apple pulp suppliers close to our production, and we are not opening new sourcing right now.
