[COPENHAGEN, Denmark, May 13, 2024] - Beyond Leather Materials, Danish producer and supplier of Leap—an innovative & premium alternative material to traditional leather crafted from European apple waste—today announced a significant expansion in its manufacturing capabilities. The launch of its first full-scale roll-to-roll production line in Germany. This development marks the commercial introduction of Leap, crafted to address Beyond Leather’s mission of Making Waste Beautiful on a global scale.
"Almost 7 years of product development and intensive Research & Development have led us to this pivotal moment," stated Mikael Eydt, Co-Founder and CEO of Beyond Leather Materials. “Leap represents a shift in how we view and utilize waste, transforming discarded materials into valuable resources. Leap stands as an example of how we can take a step further toward a more thought-through approach in material usage within industries often reliant on animal materials or purely synthetics.”
Leap, (as LEftover APples) utilizes apple waste from apple juice and cider producers, converting it into a premium material that is now 89% biobased. Each square meter of Leap saves approximately 1.8kg of apple pulp from landfill, embodying Beyond Leather’s commitment to innovation. “By using apple pulp, we aim to contribute positively—helping apple juice and cider producers reduce their waste management costs and preventing apples from ending up in landfills. This approach allows us to craft an innovative alternative to animal-based materials.” Mikael explained.
Beyond Leather is ready and able to meet the increasing demand for next-gen materials on a global scale. This milestone marks a significant step for Beyond Leather, highlighting its transition from a research-focused start-up to an operational B2B supplier. "Over the past years, we have been in contact with over 3.000 potential customers and tested Leap extensively across industries. Our new production line does not only increase our capacity but also enhances our ability to innovate and serve several markets. With the capability to.produce more than 100.000m2 of Leap in the first year alone, this expansion signifies a great advancement for us. So, after years of dedicated product development (and with the new production line running in Germany,) we can now produce Leap on 1.5m wide and 25m long rolls. This is a huge step as it means that we can produce the same dimensions as the textile industry uses today. Positioning Leap as the go-to next-gen material for minimizing waste and costs” Mikael added.
Leap is suitable for a broad range of applications ranging from small leather goods, furniture, home décor, and soon automotive interior. Forward-thinking companies interested in implementing Leap into their product applications can now select from an expanded range of product variants, including multiple colors and textures.
In addition to the scale-up, Beyond Leather is also preparing to announce several key partnerships by the summer of 2024, which will further integrate Leap into various product applications. These collaborations underscore the material’s versatility and its alignment with industry movements toward innovation within material science and ethical sourcing.
